Pacemaker

The artificial pacemaker is a medical tool or device used by doctors in order to treat patients who suffer from a sick sinus syndrome.
Sick sinus syndrome is a state wherein the sinoatrial node which is in charge of regulating heart beat does not function properly. In turn, the heart beat of the person becomes too slow, too fast or a combination of both. In other words, the heart beat becomes irregular and this could lead to numerous complications such as syncope, stroke, angina, stroke and even sudden cardiac death.

The artificial pacemaker is placed inside the body of the patient in order to treat the problem. The device is surgical placed into the left shoulder of the patient. The doctor applies a local anaesthetic before making an incision into the skin then placing in the device. The medical device then functions by monitoring the sinoatrial node if it sends signals at the right time. If the sinoatrial node does not send the electric signals at the proper times then the device sends it in order to stimulate the heart muscles to contract and thus regulating the beat of the heart.
One common question regarding this treatment is if it causes any major changes to the person’s life style. The answer is no; but there are some minor discomforts and things that the person should avoid such as full contact sports and any physical activity which requires him or her to exert huge amounts of effort. Another is that it can be a bit painful if stress is applied onto the spot where the device is located. But these are small prices to pay in order to become healthier and live longer.
