To Live with a Pacemaker

There are people who suffer from a heart condition wherein their heart beat is off. In other words, their heart is off rhythm. It could be too fast, too slow or irregular. In any case, the way to rectify this is by fixing the person’s natural pacemaker (which is the one in charge with a person’s heart beat) with an artificial one.

An artificial pacemaker is a device which is surgically placed inside the skin of the person who is suffering from the said condition. It uses electric pulses to contract the heart muscles, causing its beat to become regular once again. Not only that, it also serves as a recording device so that the doctor can check what events happen in the person’s heart in order to determine the cause of the problem.
Living with an artificial pacemaker does not necessarily disable a person but it does have some certain limitations. For example, the person can no longer be part of any full contact sport which can damage the device and make things worse. Also, the person should avoid situation which gives off strong magnetic fields such as arc welding.
A person with this device would also have to commit to a periodic check up from his or her doctor. This is important so that the doctor can check if the device is functioning properly and see if there are any problems. The periodic check up is usually at six month intervals but may vary depending upon the case of the patient and the availability of equipment.
